BALLYCROFT VINEYARD AND CELLARS

The name Ballycroft was created by combining two gaelic words;

'baile' meaning village or small town

'croft' meaning small piece of arable land or farm

"Our wine is made as a reflection of our sustainable vineyard,

the terroir and the individual vintage. Therefore expect

variation from year to year"

Joe Evans Owner/Winemaker/Viticulturist/Cellar Hand

About Our Winery

Ballycroft was originally the name of the cheesery run by Sue Evans and her sister Tracey Skepper.

Waste water was utilised to irrigate the young vines and whey used as fertilizer.
The cheesery ceased operating in 2011 but the distinctive logo still graces the Small Berry wine bottles.

The vineyard, hand planted in 1998, sits on our sloping 15 acre property in Greenock, Western Barossa Valley. In January 2016  Ballycroft Vineyard and Cellars opened the Tasting Room, once the production room for the cheese. In 2018 we built our winery, run by solar power, fed by rainwater. In 2019 we purchased our 100% electric Nissan Leaf delivery car 'Zero'. We are small, family owned, sustainable and passionate about our little slice of the Barossa and what we do.

Join Joe, the owner, winemaker, viticulturist and cellar door manager (or Sue) for a unique, fact packed and intimate cellar door experience. Joe is involved in every process of the grapes journey, carefully tending them from vine to bottle and everything in between and has over 25 vintages under his belt.
Plus he loves to talk about wine and solar so be prepared to settle in for a while.

2019 Small Berry Montepulciano

We hand picked just over 2 tonne of magnificent Montepulciano on the 12th of April 2019 from The Case families Langhorne Creek vineyard.

Fermented this violet/magenta fruit with 25% whole bunches in the mix and softly plunged over 8 days. Lightly pressed for 2 hours then left in old French Oak for only 6 months to extract the smoothest velvety tannins.

Elegant fresh cherry and raspberry nose with a multi-layered raspberry ‘redskin’ palate with a fresh fine finish.

This wine has drinkability and is cool to serve in summer slightly chilled with your favourite Italian dish.

2017 Small Berry

Mataro

2.1 tonne was picked from our stone embedded dry grown hilltop on the 20th of April with a couple of friends.

Plunged and pumped over for 10 days then basket pressed for 12 hours.

This 100% Mourvedre opens out with stellar cherry and blackcurrant nose with hints of allspice.  On the palate it’s oozing dark cherry with hints of fennel and vanilla bean from the shaved out American barrels.

A medium to solid length which will last for a decade.

Try with: Beef schnitzel with mushroom sauce

2017 Small Berry

Cabernet Sauvignon

Just under 2 tonne of ideal Langhorne Creek Cabernet from the Case family was picked on 23rd April.

Juice was plunged and pumped over its skins for 12 days to extend the fruit phenolics on the mid palate.

Result is a bright crimson red wine with dark cherry and sweet raspberry flavour with hints of apple mint. Same fruits flow through to the palate with the addition of black olive and very smooth rounded integrated almond oak.

This wine is fruit driven and carries the 28 months in older French Oak with ease.

Balanced wine will live for more than 10 years.

Try with:  lamb chops with mint sauce and new potatoes.

2017 Small Berry

Durif

Picked 1.2 tonne from 2 acres, now that's intense.

Mostly plunged over for 9 days as there was not enough juice to pump over. Slowly basket pressed for a whole day to extract every drop.

This wine was matured for 28 months in selected AP John American Oak barrels, resulting in a glass coating deep, dark exuberant red wine.

On the nose luscious dark blackberry conserve with hints of dark chocolate. The soft integrated oak mellows out the heavy Petite Sirah tannins with a smooth concentrated length.

Try with: Rare venison with beets

2017 Small Berry Shiraz

French Oak

Friends and family helped hand pick 3.7 tonne from our 3 acre hilltop block of rocky blue limestone early in March.

Fermented to perfection by hand plunging and pumping over for 14 days before being basket pressed slowly and pumped directly into shaved hogs heads and left alone for 28 months.

Big blackberry plum fruits, splash of sarsaparilla and a hint of vanilla. Pure blackberry pie on the palate with a dollop of sweet creamy walnut oak. Integrated mid palate with harmonious balance, flowing through to a generous length which will last 15 years.

Try with Osso Bucco

2017 Small Berry Shiraz American Oak

The same friends lovingly hand picked 2.5 tonne from 2 acres of dry grown vines on March 11th 2017.

Flavour ripe and good acidity, I made this wine in the same method as the shiraz above, but instead matured it in bone dry, shaved out AP John American Oak for 28 months.

This dense deep dark red offers loads of succulent

blackberry fruit and crushed vanilla pod nose. The

barberry fruit bursts in to the whole palate ending in a sweet ‘Bounty’ coconut oak which lingers for more than a minute. Rich luscious exceptional length.

This is the kind of Barossa Shiraz I fell in love with long ago. Only share this balanced beast with your best friends over the next 20 years.

2017 Small Berry

VP Fortified Vintage

Handpicked 500kg by Sue, myself and David Henderson on 23/3/2017.

A lovely 15º Be slowly fermented for 7 days then added 42 litres of 6 year old brandy spirit. Followed by 12 months in old French Oak. This wine consists of 70% Shiraz and 30% Durif.

Intense complexity. Waves of ripe blackberries and spicy ginger and red peppers flow through to velvet silky walnuts. Finishing with an overwhelming opulent length and entwined sophisticated spirit.

Keep this for 20 years if you have the years left in you otherwise drink it now and please brag about it.

2016 Small Berry

Cabernet Sauvignon

New French Oak

Being an exceptional vintage I once again kept some of the pressings separate and did a small bottling run.

New French Oak for 28 months results in a deep crimson red wine with opulent plum/blackberry flavours combined with mocha and chocolate bullets. Multi layered bottle of enormity with an extremely long palate which will take 15 years plus to meld together.

Rewarding those with patience.

This is a wine for a special occasion.
